Management of Plantar Heel Pain: Evidence-based Best Practice Guide for our Podiatrists

In a systematic review (a review of high quality research papers) by Morrissey et al. (2021) that was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine the authors aimed to provide practitioners with a ‘Best Practice Guide’ informed by their systematic review, expert clinical reasoning and patient values.

The summary to the approach is as follows:

  • 4 weeks – follow the core approach – education, stretching and taping (STRONG EVIDENCE)
  • 4 to 12 weeks (if unsatisfactory results) – initiate Shockwave therapy (STRONG EVIDENCE)
  • 12 weeks (if unsatisfactory results) – include Custom Foot Orthoses (MODERATE EVIDENCE)
  • Injections – are still classed as experimental and lack evidence for use.
