Kawana Sports & Spinal is located off Kawana Way, and only a short distance from the new Sunshine Coast hospital precinct, conveniently located near Brightwater, Currimundi, Wurtulla and Birtinya.

Accredited Exercise Physiologists are allied health professionals providing exercise and lifestyle therapies to prevent and manage chronic disease, injury, and disability.

An Exercise Physiologist (EP) is a 4 year, University-trained Allied Health professional who is an exercise prescription expert. They will work with you to design a specific exercise program tailored to your injuries, health status and goals.

Our Exercise Physiologists at Sports & Spinal can help your condition by working with you to formulate an appropriate treatment plan to assist in reaching your specific goals. Exercise Physiologists use movement and exercise in conjunction with specific education and motivational guidance to treat and manage your conditions.

Sports & Spinal’s accredited Exercise Physiologist can assist with Diabetes & Obesity, General Health & Wellbeing, Mental Health Issues, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Neurological Conditions, Strength & Conditioning, Women’s Health, Aging, Chronic Pain, Fatigue, Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Paediatrics and Cancer.

Exercise facilitates changes within the body that increases its efficiency. This allows us to be able to manage conditions or diseases, that can cause our bodies to not function to the best ability.

You can expect our Exercise Physiologist to listen to your personal story and ask questions, so they can work with you to guide an appropriate treatment plan. Our Exercise Physiologist will complete a detailed, goal-focused, clinical, and functional assessment.

Treatment will vary and be specific to you but will likely involve modified movement and exercises to build your capacity and function through strength, fitness, balance, and more. Treatment will change and progress while working alongside your Exercise Physiologist. Our Exercise physiologists will provide education on health, conditions, injuries and what to do and what not to do may take place in different environments, including our onsite gym, your regular gym and pools, depending on your interests and goals. Our Exercise Physiologist believes in a multi-disciplinary approach and will work with other health professionals to help manage your condition.

Kawana Sports & Spinal is NDIS registered and accepts Medicare rebates and HICAPS health fund claims. EFTPOS and credit card facilities are also available for payment.

Shannon Chilman

Exercise Physiologist

Shannon is an exercise physiologist with a special interest in women’s health and adolescent athletics. Originally from the USA, she has completed her Bachelor’s in Athletic Training and Master’s in Exercise and Sports Medicine where she spent 2 years working with collegiate sports rehabilitation. Most recently, she received her Master’s in Clinical Exercise Physiology from Australian Catholic University in Brisbane.

Shannon has cultivated a holistic approach to helping others achieve their goals. She understands enjoying a healthy lifestyle means you have to acknowledge the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. She also believes exercise should not be boring and strives to make each session fun and engaging.

Shannon has been on the Sunshine Coast for the last 6 years and enjoys spending her time cooking as well as hiking the local trails.

Shannon is available for exercise physiology appointments at our Kawana clinic.

Tenikka Mogno

Exercise Physiologist

Tenikka completed her exercise physiology degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2017 when she landed her job at Sports and Spinal. Tenikka is driven to help people manage their conditions through exercise prescription and education on behaviour change for long-term management in a collaborative approach.

Tenikka has many years of experience working with chronic disease management including musculoskeletal, neurological, and metabolic conditions, in particular working largely in the NDIS space and also running our type 2 diabetes program throughout the year. Her welcoming nature has her patients at ease and open to setting new goals and creating positive change.

Tenikka is the SSP team leader for our exercise physiologists on the Sunshine Coast, she is passionate about supporting her team and driving the service to its full potential.

On the weekends you’ll find her out in the water or reading a good book.

Tenikka is available for Exercise Physiology appointments at our Kawana location.

LOWER BACK PAIN ⚡️

Unfortunately, back pain is a common problem in our society, with 80-90% of adults experiencing back pain in their lifetime.

Here’s 3 tips you should know:
1. Early movement is key! Avoiding bed rest is important in helping your recovery and will not cause harm 🧘‍♀️

2. Pain does not necessarily mean damage! Think of pain as your body’s internal alarm system, sensing for danger that might cause you harm. Sometimes, this alarm system can react in a way that’s not proportionate to the danger it detects 🚨 ‼️

3. Don’t panic! Most lower back pain will go away within the first 4-6 weeks. Be confident your back will get better with time if you stay active and follow the advice given by your health professionals
